SMU Falls To Baylor In Opener

The SMU Mustangs opened the season with a disappointing 59-24 loss at Baylor.  It is the second straight year the Mustangs have opened the season with a blowout loss to a Big 12 team.

The SMU offense was slow to get in sync with a new offensive line and quarterback.  Garrett Gilbert, transfer from Texas, started his first game as Mustang QB.  Gilbert completed 34 of 59 passes for 286 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Jeremy Johnson led the Mustang receivers with 9 catches for 76 yards and a touchdown.   Darius Johnson also grabbed 9 for 58 yards.

A bright spot for SMU was running back Zach Line, who had his 16th 100+ yard game, second only to Eric Dickerson in school history.  Line had 135 yards on 25 carries.

Both defenses struggled throughout the game as each team gained over 500 yards on offense.  Baylor capitalized on 3 SMU turnovers, scoring 21 points from the Mustang miscues.

The Mustangs’ schedule does not get much easier. After a home game against Stephen F. Austin, SMU will host SEC team Texas A&M, followed by a visit from cross-town rival and Big 12 foe TCU.
