SMU M-Tennis Falls To No. 23 Notre Dame

NOTRE DAME, Ind. (SMU) – The SMU men’s tennis team was defeated by No. 23 Notre Dame 6-1 Sunday afternoon. The loss snaps the Mustangs’ 11-match win streak and moves the team to 14-6 on the season.

“It was a hard-fought battle against Notre Dame,” head coach Carl Neufeld said. “They are an excellent team. I am very proud of our guys and thought we played exceptionally well in doubles.”

SMU opened the day by earning the doubles point. Joseph Hattrup and Tobias Flood combined to beat Spencer Talmadge and Niall Fitzgerald 8-3 in the top spot, while Adham el-Effendi and Darren Walsh downed the duo of Stephen Havens and Casey Watt 8-6. The No. 68 pairing of Artem Baradach and Gaston Cuadranti lost 8-6 to Greg Andrews and Tyler Davis.

The Mustangs fought hard but fell short as Notre Dame swept singles play. No. 64 Watt defeated No. 39 Baradach 7-5, 7-6 (7-5) in the No. 1 spot, handing Baradach just his third loss of the season. No. 125 Havens downed Cuadranti 6-3, 6-2, while Mischa Nowicki fell 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) to No. 89 Daniel Stahl. el-Effendi was defeated 6-0, 7-6 (7-4) by Andrews, and Flood lost to Blas Moros 6-2, 6-4. Robert Sajovich lost in three sets as he was defeated 6-0, 6-7 (5-7), 6-2 by Fitzgerald.

SMU hosts UT Arlington on Wednesday at Turpin Tennis Center at 6 p.m.
