SMU Men’s Tennis Shuts Out Arkansas-Fort Smith

DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU Mustangs took their second win of the season with a 7-0 defeat of the Arkansas-Fort Smith Lions at the Samuell Grand Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon.

The Mustangs were playing their first match since Feb. 2, a win at Florida Gulf Coast. The team had three weeks to work and improve their play, and they reaped the rewards.

“We’re really happy with the guys’ energy today,” Head Coach Carl Neufeld said. “We were able to put into match play many of the things we’ve been working on the last few weeks in practice.”

Arturs Kazijevs improved to 3-3 on the season, with all his matches coming at the No. 1 position. Mischa Nowicki is also now 3-3. Kazijevs and Nowicki have been SMU’s No. 1 doubles tandem all spring, and now hold a 3-2 record after Saturday. The duo is ranked No. 53 in the latest ITA national rankings.

SMU’s next match is at TCU next Saturday. The Mustangs will follow that with a home match on Monday against Tulane.
