SMU Opens Tennis Season With Win

DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU Mustangs started their spring season in strong fashion, defeating UC Santa Barbara 6-1 in the first match held at the Brookshire Indoor Pavilion at the new SMU Tennis Complex on Monday.

SMU (1-0) came out strong in doubles play, with senior Arturs Kazijevs and sophomore Markus Kerner teaming up to beat Tobias Galskov and Chase Masciorini, 6-2. Freshman Samm Butler and sophomore Tony Russell clinched the opening match point for SMU with a 6-4 victory over Morgan Mays and Teague Hamilton, with junior Nate Lammons and sophomore Arkadijs Slobodkins leading 5-4 at the time on court two.

Butler would tally SMU’s first singles point, winning in straight sets at No. 3 singles over Cody Rakela; 6-3, 6-3. The Mustangs would then rattle off wins in the next four singles matches, starting with straight-set victories for Slobodkins at No. 5 singles (6-4, 6-4), Kazijevs at No. 1 (6-4, 6-4) and freshman Charlie Nettlefold at No. 6 (7-6, 6-4).

Lammons won the match-deciding fourth point for SMU, beating Nathan Eshmade in three sets; 6-1, 2-6, 6-1. UCSB’s lone singles win came at No. 2 singles, as Mays and Kerner went to a tiebreak after three sets, with Mays coming out victorious; 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (4).

SMU will host Troy on Saturday at 11 a.m., followed by two home matches on Sunday against Abilene Christian (12 p.m.) and McMurry (4 p.m.).
