SMU Routs Houston

The SMU Mustangs rolled over the University of Houston 72-42 Thursday night at Gerald J. Ford Stadium.

The Mustangs set a new school record with 10 touchdowns in the game.  

The SMU defense forced 9 turnovers in the game, giving them 25 on the season which leads the nation.  The Mustangs also lead the nation with 16 interceptions after recording 6 in the game.  3 of the interceptions were returned for touchdowns.

Quarterback Garrett Gilbert completed 23 of 38 passes for 265 yards and 4 touchdowns.  He was intercepted twice.  His primary receiver was Darius Johnson with 9 catches for 110 yards and 2 touchdowns.   Jeremy Johnson also had 9 catches, for 94 yards.

Running back Zach Line entered the game tied for 4th among active NCAA players for career rushing touchdowns and added 2 more to give him 39.  Line passes Doak Walker for 3rd all-time at SMU.  Line gained 113 yards on 22

carries.  It is his 19th game with 100 or more yards, trailing only Eric Dickerson in school history.

Linebacker Taylor Reed scored his first career touchdown on one of two interceptions.  Reed also had 4 solo tackles, giving him 219 for his career.  Reed entered the game 2nd in NCAA among active players.

Safety Brett Haness made his first career start and made an interception and 7 tackles.

Defensive tackle Darrian Wright scored his first career touchdown on his first career interception.

Houston outgained the Mustangs offensively, 560 yards to 384.  The trio of Houston quarterbacks, Crawford Jones, David Piland, amd Bram Kohlhausen each threw 2 interceptions.

SMU will host Memphis for Homecoming on October 27.  Kickoff is at 2:00pm at Ford Stadium.
