SMU Soccer Defeats Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (SMU) – Three different Mustangs scored goals in the SMU men’s soccer team’s 3-1 victory over Memphis on Wednesday evening at Mike Rose Stadium. With the win, SMU improved to 8-2-2 overall, 3-0 in American play, while Memphis fell to 2-6-2 overall, 1-1-1 in American play.

Junior Stanton Garcia opened up scoring in the 46th minute after he got his head on a cross from teammate Jared Rice. The goal was Garcia’s third of the season and the assist was Rice’s sixth, a team high.

“Winning on the road is never easy,” Head Coach Kevin Hudson said. “Memphis sat pretty deep and it took us awhile to finally break them down. Once we found the first goal the second came quickly after that.”

In the 49th minute, freshman Christian Boorom received a cross from

John Lujano and punched it into the bottom right hand corner of the goal to give the Mustangs a 2-0 advantage over the Tigers. Freshman Emil Cuello was also credited with the assist, his fourth of the season.

The Tigers’ lone goal came in the 50th minute when an SMU foul in the box provided Memphis player Raul Gonzalez with a penalty kick.

The Mustangs struck again in the 63rd minute when sophomore Mauro Cichero secured the victory with an insurance goal, his seventh of the season. The Norman, Oklahoma, native collected a pass from Bryce Clark and placed the ball in the back of the net.

The Mustangs outshot the Tigers, 11-4, Cichero leading the way with four while Brenden Lee and Garcia tallied two shots of their own.

In the net for SMU, goalkeeper Michael Nelson recorded two saves of the three shots on goal he faced. Memphis goalkeeper Cody Uzcategui recorded five saves of the eight shots on goal he faced.

“It was a good team performance and we are happy to take full points,” Hudson said. “We now have to stay focused for another tough match against UConn on Saturday.”

The Ponies return to the Hilltop to host Connecticut on Saturday, Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. CT. Ticket information, www.smumustangs.com/tickets.
