SMU Soccer Tops FIU 2-1 In OT

DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU men’s soccer team defeated FIU, 2-1, in overtime on Sunday night at Westcott Field. Sophomore Juan Castillo scored in regulation and senior Diogo de Almeida netted the overtime game-winner for the Mustangs. With the win, SMU moves to 8-4-1 on the season and now has a 3-1-1 mark in C-USA. FIU is now 4-6-3 on the year and holds a 1-3-1 record in league play.

FIU got on the board first with a goal by Quentin Albrecht in the 30th minute. After a lead pass from Roberto De Sousa, Albrecht went one-on-one with SMU goalie Jaime Ibarra and tucked the ball under Ibarra on the right side.

Castillo tied the game at one with his goal in the 59th minute. Redshirt freshman Damian Rosales ran down the right side of the field and sent a cross into the box to Castillo who headed it home. The tally was Castillo’s fourth of the season.

de Almeida won the game for SMU with his goal in the 94th minute. After a flurry of chances in front of the net, de Almeida collected an Arthur Ivo rebound and buried the ball from eight yards out. The goal was de Almeida’s third of the season and second in as many games. The assist was Ivo’s team-leading 18th point of the season.

The Mustangs outshot FIU 15-9 and had a 6-2 advantage in shots on goal.

SMU hosts Missouri State on Oct. 21 at Westcott Field at 7 p.m. The Mustangs opened 2010 with a come-from-behind 3-2 double-overtime win over the Bears. Zach Barnes scored on a 30-yard header, and Juan Castillo tied the game in the 88th minute. T.J. Nelson netted the game-winner in the 103rd minute.
