SMU Swim Team Wins At UNT

DENTON, Texas (SMU) – The No. 23 SMU women’s swim team defeated Houston, 199-95, and North Texas, 180-118, in a double dual meet Wednesday afternoon at the Norval Pohl Recreation Center. With the wins, the Mustangs move to 3-1 in dual meets this season.

SMU earned huge points by finishing one-two in both relays on the afternoon. In the 200-yard medley relay, the squad of Isabella Arcila, Rachel Nicol, Danielle Villars and Monika Babok took first with a time of 1:44.24. Deanna Matthews, Erica Donadon, Nicole Parmenter and Emily Vavourakis placed second with a mark of 1:46.23. In the 200-yard freestyle relay, Arcila, Babok, Nathalie Lindborg and Nina Rangelova teamed up to win in 1:34.62. Parmenter, Vavourakis, Chloe Farrar and Donadon were second (1:38.24).

The Mustangs swept the medal stand in the sprint freestyle events. Lindborg won the 50-yard freestyle, clocking in with a time of 23.77, as Babok (24.46) and Parmenter (24.59) were second and third, respectively. Lindborg also took top honors in the 100-meter freestyle (51.14), just ahead of Rangelova (52.19) and Danielle Villars (53.59).

Lindborg placed first in the 200-yard freestyle (1:50.08), narrowly edging out teammate Rangelova (1:50.55). Rangelova had a win of her own in the 500-yard with a time of 5:00.46. Alice McCall was third in the 500 (5:05.77) and had runner-up honors in the 1,000-yard freestyle.

Backstroke-specialist Arcila earned wins in the 100- and 200-yard backstrokes, recording marks of 56.59 and 2:02.68, respectively.

Sophomore All-American Nicol had a pair of wins in the breaststroke events. In the 100-yard breaststroke, Nicol clocked in at 1:04.01. Donadon placed third with a time of 1:05.08. Nicol swam the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:17.75. Nicol also placed second in the 200-yard individual medley (2:08.84), just ahead of Matthews (2:09.30) who was third.

Freshman Villars won the 100- and 200-yard butterflies. Villars touched the wall in 56.91 in the 100-meter as Babok was second (58.33). In the 200-yard event, Villars posted a winning time of 2:08.02.

The Mustangs compete in the Austin Grand Prix this weekend.
