SMU Tennis Beats Texas A&M-CC

DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU Mustangs picked up their seventh win of the season on Thursday night, beating Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 5-2 at the Brad and Ann Brookshire Indoor Family Pavilion at the SMU Tennis Complex.

SMU (7-1) earned the opening doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Junior Nate Lammons and sophomore Arkadijs Slobodkins improved to 4-0 on the season with a quick 6-1 win at the No. 2 spot. Senior Arturs Kazijevs and sophomore Markus Kerner gave SMU the 1-0 match lead with a 6-4 win at No. 1 doubles, giving the duo their third win of the spring.

Slobodkins extended SMU’s lead and his own unbeaten streak with a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles over Javier Pujol. Slobodkins has won six straight singles matches dating back to Jan. 25. Freshman Charles Nettlefold made SMU’s lead 3-0 with a 6-3, 6-4 win at the No. 6 position over Paul Cook. Nettlefold has the second-longest unbeaten streak on the team, having not lost in his last five decisions.

The Islanders bounced back with Kevin Bettendroffer earning a 1-6, 7-5, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles, making the match score 3-1. Lammons would secure the win for SMU though with his own comeback victory, beating Guillaume Rauseo 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 at No. 4.

Freshman Samm Butler picked up SMU’s final point, winning at No. 3 singles over Ricardo Mayagoitia 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.

Next up for the Mustangs is a pair of matches on Saturday. SMU will take on Nebraska at 2 p.m. CT, followed by a tilt with Ouachita Baptist at 6 p.m. CT.
