SMU Tennis Downs Troy

DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU Mustangs improved their record to 2-0 on Saturday, defeating Troy, 5-2, at the Brookshire Indoor Pavilion at the SMU Tennis Complex.

SMU (2-0) opened the match by winning at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Senior Arturs Kazijevs and sophomore Markus Kerner defeated Troy’s Giovana Samaha and Daniel Bustamante, 6-1; while junior Nate Lammons and sophomore Akradijs Slobodkins topped Pablo Moreno and Gabriel Dias, 6-2. Troy won at No. 3 doubles, 6-1.

For the second straight match, freshman Samm Butler won SMU’s first singles match, beating Bustamante at No. 3 singles in straight sets, 6-0, 6-4. Lammons gave SMU a 3-0 match lead with a win at No. 4 singles over Andy Lau, 6-4, 7-5.

Troy got two points back with wins at No. 5 and No. 2 singles. Kazijevs would clinch the win for SMU promptly after, coming from behind to beat Dias 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. Freshman Charles Nettlefold also tallied a win, beating Moreno at No. 6 singles 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.

SMU will host a double-header tomorrow, facing Abilene Christian at 12 p.m. CT, followed by a meeting with McMurry at 4 p.m. CT.
