SMU Tennis Sweeps Doubleheader

DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU Mustangs men’s tennis team picked up two wins on Sunday at the Brad and Ann Brookshire Family Indoor Pavilion. SMU’s record is now 6-1 to open the spring season.

The Mustangs started the morning with a 9 a.m. tilt against Arkansas-Pine Bluff. The match only included singles play, with SMU winning 6-0. SMU then followed with a 7-0 victory over Texas-Permian Basin.

Markus Kerner played No. 1 singles in both matches for the first time this season, and freshman Samm Butler moved up to No. 2 for the first time as well. Freshman Eric Fitz-Randolph made his dual-match debut against Arkansas-Pine Bluff, winning at No. 5 singles, 6-1, 6-0.

Freshman Alec Josepher also made his dual-match debut on Sunday, playing at No. 6 singles versus Texas-Permian Basin, winning 6-1, 6-1. Sophomore Tony Russell played at No. 4 singles against the Falcons, earning a 6-0, 6-1 victory.

Sophomore Arkadijs Slobodkins won both of his matches on Sunday by scores of 6-0, 6-0. Slobodkins played at No. 4 against Arkansas-Pine Bluff and at No. 5 against Texas-Permian Basin.

Julio Olaya, also a sophomore, played at No. 3 singles in both matches, marking the first time he has played in that position.

SMU won all three doubles matches against the Falcons, continuing the Mustangs’ perfection in doubles play to begin the spring. SMU has yet to lose the opening doubles point in any match.

The Mustangs will host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Thursday at 6 p.m. CT at the SMU Tennis Complex. SMU will then host both Nebraska and Ouachita Baptist on Saturday, at 2 p.m. CT and 6 p.m. CT, respectively.
