SMU Tennis Sweeps Old Dominion

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (SMU) – The fourth-seeded SMU Mustangs swept fifth seed Old Dominion 4-0 in the Conference USA Championship quarterfinals on Friday. SMU advances to play the top seed, Tulsa, tomorrow at 12 p.m. CT.

SMU (11-9, ranked 72nd nationally) took the doubles point over Old Dominion (14-7, No. 73 in the nation) after winning two of the three doubles matches. Gaston Cuadranti and Alex Sanders defeated Albert Ochagavia and Jonas Kuwert 8-3 to get the day started. Arturs Kazijevs and Mischa Nowicki, the No. 83 doubles pair in the nation, were upset by Carlos Lopez Villa and Can Cetinel, 8-6. SMU’s top doubles duo had won its last eight decisions heading into Friday. Nate Lammons andEduardo Razzeto (making their first appearance as a pair this season) clinched the first point of the match for the Mustangs with an 8-4 victory over Wesley Barrett and Tim Schweig.

Lammons kept the Mustangs’ momentum going, winning the first singles match 6-4, 6-0 over Schweig. Cuadranti then earned his seventh win of the spring by defeating Ochagavia 6-2, 6-2. Nowicki then clinched victory for SMU by beating Zvonimir Podvinski 6-4, 6-4.

“We always try to play our best tennis at the end of the year and today we did that,” Head Coach Carl Neufeld said. “It was a total team effort over a good Old Dominion team.”

SMU will now turn its focus to the top seed in the tournament, Tulsa. The two teams met on March 10, which resulted in a 6-1 victory for the Golden Hurricane. Tulsa is ranked 23rd in the nation. The match will start at 12 p.m. CT tomorrow and live stats are available here.
