SMU topples Rice in overtime

SMU needed overtime to defeat Rice 76-66 in overtime on Wednesday night.  The Mustangs led by 11 with 2:15 to go in regulation when Rice went on an 18-7 run to send the game into overtime.

Jeremiah Samarrippas scored 8 of his 10 points in the extra period as SMU outscored Rice 19-9 to win the game.

With the victory SMU improves to 17-10 overall and 8-5 in the C-USA, just one game out of the conference lead.  It ties for the most wins for SMU in a season.  The Mustangs have won 7 of their last 9 games.   They are 9-1 when scoring 70 or more points.

SMU hit 6 3-pointers, extending their school record to 226 for the season.

Papa Dia had his 12th double-double of the season, scoring 20 points and grabbing 13 rebounds.  Robert Nyakundi led the Mustangs with 26 points, it is the 6th time this season both he and Dia have each scored 20 or more points in a game.

SMU plays next at Marshall on February 26 at 6 p.m. at Moody Coliseum.
