SMU Track and Field In First Place At C-USA Championships

HOUSTON, Texas (SMU) – The SMU women’s track team is in first place after three days of competition at the Conference USA Track and Field Championships.

The Mustangs have 50 points after seven events, leading second place UTEP by 15 points. Lisa Egarter got SMU off to a quick start with a second place finish in the heptathlon. She was leading into the final event, the 800-meter run, but Elaine Derricott won the final event to take the victory.

Simone Du Toit and Ayla Gill gave SMU a combined 16 points in two throw events, with du Toit winning the shot put and Gill finishing third in the hammer throw. Klara Bodinson and Silje Fjortoft finished first and second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase to push the team’s point total to the top at the end of Saturday’s event.

The Mustangs were fifth entering Saturday’s competition, but earned 22 points to climb into first. The Conference USA Championships will conclude on Sunday.
