SMU Track and Field Takes Top Spot In Five Events At Mean Green Twilight

DENTON, Texas (SMU) – The SMU track and field team wrapped up the regular season at the Mean Green Twilight Saturday night, hosted by North Texas. The Mustangs finished first in five of the 12 events they entered, competing against several Big XII teams as well as the Mean Green.

The highlight of the night for the Mustangs was the 1500 meter run, in which SMU swept the podium and took four of the top five spots with Silje Fjortoft taking first with a time of 4:28.27. Kristine Eikrem-Engeset was second, finishing in 4:29.90, and Lovisa Lindh was third with a time of 4:31.97. Klara Bodinson took fifth in 4:33.11.

Monika Korra gave SMU a sweep of the distance events, winning the 5000 meter run in 17:47.29, and Stephanie Wright was fourth in the event. Amber Evans raced to victory in the 200 meter, finishing three-hundredths of a second ahead of the second place finisher with a time of 24.16.

SMU also won the 4X400 relay with the team of Evans, Egheosa Osawemwenze, Isis Wilson and Lakeisha James posting a time of 3:47.39, nearly 11 seconds ahead of the second place team.

Osawemwenze was third in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:04.17, mere seconds out of first, while Maresha Carrie was fourth with a 1:04.91.

Ayla Gill gave SMU its fifth event win of the meet, winning the hammer throw with a toss of 55.44 meters. Lisa Egarter was second in the high jump with a jump of 1.63 meters, while Simone Du Toit was second in the discus throw at 51.68 meters.

The Mustangs will compete at the Conference USA Championships in Houston May 12-15.
