SMU Volleyball Defeas Tulane

DALLAS (SMU) – Avery Acker became the third player in SMU history with 4,000 career assists, recording 42 to lead the SMU volleyball team to a 3-0 win against Tulane (25-18, 25-10, 25-20). With the win, SMU improved to 24-3 overall and 14-1 in the American Athletic Conference, winning 14 straight matches.

The Mustangs used a 9-0 run to come from behind and take a 19-16 lead in the third set, scoring on seven kills and a block during the rally. SMU held on to win the set 25-20, completing its sixth sweep in the last seven matches. Tulane (9-18, 3-12 The American) was held to nine kills in the set, failing to score 10 in a set during the match.

Abbey Bybel and Kristen Stehling led the Mustangs with a match-high 11 kills each. Stehling had just two errors, hitting .474. Cailin Bula scored nine kills, and Katie Hegarty added seven. SMU hit .302 for the match, scoring 51 kills, and held Tulane to a .106 attack percentage.Morgan Heise recorded 22 digs, tied for eighth in a three-set match at SMU, and Bybel finished with nine digs.

SMU had twice as many kills as Tulane in the first set, out-scoring the

Green Wave 18-9 off the attack, to take a 1-0 lead in the match with a 25-18 victory. With the score tied, 4-4, the Mustangs went on a 7-1 run to take an 11-5 lead. Stehling had five kills during the stretch and finished the set with seven in nine attempts. Tulane got to within one point, 17-16, but SMU out-scored the Green Wave 8-2 down the stretch for the win.

The Mustangs cruised to a 25-10 win in the second set for a 2-0 lead in the match. SMU took an 11-2 lead to start the set. The Mustangs stretched the lead to double digits, taking a 14-4 lead, and Tulane never got to within seven points the rest of the set. SMU hit .397 with 14 kills and just three errors. Tulane was held to a -.054 attack percentage with six kills and eight errors, including three blocks by SMU.

SMU takes on Houston in Moody Coliseum Sunday at 1 p.m. The Cougars won the first meeting 3-0 on their home court, handing the Mustangs their only league loss to date.
