SMU Volleyball Falls To No. 22 Long Beach State; Drop Five-Setter To Oregon State

LONG BEACH, Calif. (SMU) – The SMU volleyball team lost a pair of matches at the Baden Classic hosted by Long Beach State. The Mustangs (3-5) rallied to force a fifth set before falling 3-2 to Oregon State (6-2) before falling 3-0 to No. 22 Long Beach State (4-3) in the nightcap.

Needing to win the fourth set to avoid defeat against Oregon State, SMU trailed 20-15. The Mustangs, led by two-time All-American Dana Powell, rallied to take the set 27-25. The Mustangs matched the Beavers point for point to start the fifth set, but three straight attack errors with the score tied 7-7 gave Oregon State a 9-7 lead. The Beavers capitalized on the mistakes and won the match with a 15-10 victory in the fifth set.

After Oregon State scored the final two points of the first set to win 25-23, the Mustangs evened the match with a 25-22 victory in the second set. The Beavers took the third set 25-21, scoring five of the last six points.

Powell, Kelli Becerra and Savannah Myklebust finished the match with double-doubles. Powell led SMU in kills with 19 and digs with 23, while Myklebust had 11 kills and 17 digs. Becerra scored her team-leading fourth double-double of the season with 51 assists, matching her season-high, and 12 digs.

In their second match of the day, the Mustangs fell 3-0 to No. 22 Long Beach State, playing its first match of the tournament. Jessica Oliver and Courtney Manning led the Mustangs in the match with seven kills each.

The Mustangs close out the Baden Classic Saturday against Utah State at 7 p.m. CT.
