SMU Volleyball Falls To Tulsa

TULSA, Okla. (SMU) – Olivia Bailey had her third double-double of the season with a team-high 18 digs and 31 assists in the Mustangs 3-1 loss at Tulsa, ending SMU’s two-match winning streak over the defending Conference USA champions.
Carla Armstrong and Courtney Manning led the Mustangs with eight kills, and Armstrong had 11 digs, just missing her second double-double of the season. Manning had three blocks, pushing her career total to 510, and Maddie Lozano had a team-high four blocks and seven kills.
The Mustangs took the second set 26-24 to even the match, capped off by a huge block by Caroline Daly and Lozano on a Tyler Henderson attack attempt which would’ve tied the score. SMU kept the score within two before Tulsa broke an 8-8 tie to take an 11-8 lead. The Golden Hurricane led by as many as four points before SMU tied the score, 17-17.
SMU pushed its lead in the second to three, 21-18, led during the run by Armstrong, who had six kills in the set. Tulsa tied the
set, but a kill by Caroline Young and the block on set point evened the match for the Mustangs.
Tulsa took the third set 25-23, holding off the hard-charging Mustangs for a 2-1 advantage in the match. SMU took the first significant lead in the set, opening up a 13-9 lead, but Tulsa went on a 7-0 run to take a 16-13 lead. Tulsa stretched the lead to six, 23-17, before the Mustangs went on a run behind Lozano’s serve. The junior transfer scored an ace to pull SMU to within one point, 24-22, but one more Manning kill was all the Mustangs could get before the Golden Hurricane closed the set, 25-23.
The Golden Hurricane didn’t give the Mustangs a chance to tie the match again. Tulsa took the fourth set 25-8 to improve to 8-7 on the season, 1-0 in C-USA. Henderson scored a match-high 18 kills, and Diana Silva had 16 kills for Tulsa. The Mustangs fell to 3-10, 0-1 in C-USA.
Seven Mustangs recorded kills in the first set, but Tyler Henderson had eight kills for Tulsa to lead the Golden Hurricane to a 25-15 win in the first frame. Tulsa scored seven of the first eight points before SMU ended the run, but within four points was as close as the Mustangs get before the end of the set.
SMU returns to Moody Coliseum to host East Carolina Friday at 7 p.m. The Mustangs will face Marshall at home on Sunday at 1 p.m. before going on a four-match road trip.
