TULSA, Okla. (SMU) – SMU Mustangs sophomore Shelby Redman scored on a penalty kick in the 33rd minute to tie the score at 1-1, but a second half goal by Tulsa led to a 2-1 Mustangs loss on Friday night at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium.

Redman’s goal was her eighth of the season and gives her a team-leading 22 points. The sophomore made a shifty move past a Tulsa defender who had to trip Redman in order to prevent the easy goal. The Mustangs dropped to 8-7-4 (4-3-4 C-USA) and will head into the Conference USA Tournament as the seventh seed. Tulsa (11-5-3, 6-3-2 C-USA) will be the fifth seed.

SMU was looking to improve its seeding and gain some confidence heading into the first round of the conference tournament on Wednesday, but was unable to accomplish either.

“We didn’t gain any momentum, that’s for sure,” Head Coach Chris Petrucelli said. “We got outplayed tonight. We’ll have to play better if we want to keep playing.”

The Mustangs had a couple opportunities to force a tie in the closing moments of the game. SMU had corner kicks from either side of the goal in the late stages, but were not able to produce the tying marker.

Tulsa took the lead in the 69th minute on a goal from Stephanie Aitken, her sixth of the season. Aitken redirected a shot from Jordan O’Brien right in front of the goal, leaving SMU goalkeeper Lauryn Bodden with no way to make the save. Bodden did make a career-high eight stops in the contest.

SMU will travel to El Paso, Texas, to the campus of UTEP on Tuesday in preparation for its first round game in the C-USA Tournament on Wednesday. Game time and opponent are to be determined.
