SMU W-Tennis Defeats SFA

DALLAS (SMU) – Sophomore Vaszilisza Bulgakova won the No. 1 singles match over Malena Gordo, 6-1, 7-6 (7-5) as the SMU women’s tennis team opened its 2014 spring season by defeating Stephen F. Austin, 6-1, at the Northwood Country Club in Dallas. With the win, Bulgakova improved to 8-3 overall this season. This was the first match of the spring season for both SMU and SFA.

“We did a good job overall,” head coach Kati Gyulai said. “The first match of the season is all about getting our nerves under control and I think we did a good job with that.”

In addition, freshman Dasha Sharapova beat Denise Maxl at the No. 2 singles position, 6-2, 7-5. In the No. 3 singles match, freshman Anna Kate Anderson defeated Macarena Acosta in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2. With the wins, Sharapova and Anderson improved to 7-5 and 6-4, respectively.

In the No. 4 and No. 5 singles matches, sophomores Hristina Dishkova (9-6) and Yana Erkeeva (7-4) each won by scores of 6-0, 6-1 in their respective matches.

SMU swept the doubles matches as Bulgakova and Sharapova improved their record to 6-1 after defeating Gordo and Maxl, 6-2. Erkeeva and Elliott (5-1) won the other doubles match against Andrea Ternera and Acosta, 6-1.

The Mustangs are back in action on Sunday, Jan. 26 when they host Northwestern State at 12:00 p.m. at the Northwood Country Club in Dallas.

“We need to come out stronger tomorrow and with a greater sense of intensity,” Gyulai continued. “Today was good start to the season but we still have much to improve upon.”
