SMU W-Tennis Falls To Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The SMU women’s tennis team fell to American Athletic Conference foe Memphis, 4-0, on Friday morning at the Racquet Club of Memphis.

“There are definitely some positives we can take away from today’s loss,” said head coach Kati Gyulai. “I believe this team will rebound quickly and be ready for the next week.”

The Mustangs dropped to 14-5 overall and 3-2 in conference play, while Memphis improved to 8-12 and 3-2.

The Tigers won the doubles point with wins in the No. 1 and 2 matches.Hristina Dishkova and Holly Verner (No. 2) suffered their first loss of the spring, falling to Marta Morga and Liza Tymchenko, 6-0. Anki Wind and Kathryn Hughes (No. 1) clinched the point for Memphis, defeatingVaszilisza Bulgakova and Dasha Sharapova, 6-4.

In singles, Morga (No. 3) pushed the Tigers’ lead to 2-0, topping Sharapova, 6-3, 6-2. Wind (No. 1), ranked 123rd in the latest ITA rankings, put Memphis within a point of clinching, defeating Dishkova, 6-2, 6-4.

Hughes (No. 4) then notched the match-clinching point, beating Yana Erkeeva, 6-3, 6-0.

The Mustangs remain on the road for another conference matchup with rival Houston on Wednesday, April 8 at 11 a.m.
