SMU W-Tennis Loses To Houston

DALLAS (SMU) – Freshman Dasha Sharapova (15-9) notched her second straight victory with a three-set win over Houston sophomore Maria Cardenas, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4, but the No. 24 ranked Cougars proved to be too strong as they defeated the Mustangs, 5-2 in Dallas on Saturday. SMU is back in action on March 26 in Arlington, Texas at UTA at 2 p.m. CT.

Houston (12-3, 3-0) earned the opening the doubles point of the match by winning at the No. 1 and 2 positions. The Cougars then won the No. 1, 2, 4 and 5 singles matches to secure the dual match victory over the Mustangs (6-10, 3-2).

In addition to Sharapova, freshman Anna Kate Anderson defeated Cougar sophomore Rocio Martin in three sets, 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 as she improved her overall record to 12-12.

In doubles, sophomore Yana Erkeeva and freshman Macie Elliott improved their overall record to 12-6 as the Mustang duo disposed of Houston’s No. 3 doubles pair, 8-5.

Following Wednesday’s match at UTA, SMU begins a four-match homestand beginning back in action on March 29 at 4 p.m. when the Mustangs host Middle Tennessee State at the Northwood Country Club in Dallas.
