SMU W-Tennis Sweeps Weekend Matches

DALLAS (SMU) – SMU improved to 5-0 in dual matches this season after sweeping UTRGV, 7-0, Saturday evening at the SMU Tennis Complex.

The Mustangs wrapped up the weekend with three wins in two days after defeating Sam Houston State (7-0) Friday and picking up two victories against Northwestern State (6-1) and UTRGV (7-0) Saturday, respectively.

“We were professional and competed well this weekend,” head coach Kati Gyulai said. “We did a good job closing out matches, which was one important thing we talked about. We feel we are making progress in all areas.”

SMU grabbed the first point in the match after registering wins in No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. Ellie Zogg paired up with Ana Perez-Lopez to defeat UTRGV’s Chloe Leclere and Dominique Ibarra, 6-1, while seniors Mary Wright and Macie Elliott shutout Marine Darzyan and Amanda Guardia, 6-0.

In singles action, SMU extended its lead with Liza Buss winning 6-0, 6-0 against Dominique Esaparza. Wright also won in straight sets with a 6-1, 6-4 victory against Guardia, while Perez-Lopez gave the Mustangs a 4-0 lead after a 6-0, 6-1 win against Ibarra.

The Mustangs continued to rack up wins as Anselmo and Sharapova each recorded 6-1, 6-1 wins in No. 4 and No. 2 singles, respectively. Ellie Zogg completed the sweep after she won a close 6-4, 6-3 match against Leclere in No. 5 singles.

SMU returns to action Wednesday, Feb. 15 to host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Action is slated to begin at 5 p.m. CT.
