SMU W-Tennis: Wins 4-3 Over No. 40 Princeton

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (SMU) — The No. 57 SMU Women’s Tennis team scored a 4-3 victory over No. 40 Princeton on the final day of the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic. The Mustangs won the top four singles positions, including a 6-2, 6-2 win by Edyta Cieplucha over No. 84 Hilary Bartlett at No. 1 singles.

The victory at No. 1 is Cieplucha’s second over a ranked opponent this season as she improved to 6-1 in dual matches. Elena Fayner won at No. 2 singles, going 3-0 in the Blue Gray Tournament. Fayner is now 3-4 in her first season on the Hilltop.

Ashley Turpin improved to 1-2 on the season with a 6-1, 6-2 sweep of Princeton’s (5-5) Katie Goepel at No. 4 singles. Heather Steinbauer earned SMU’s other point when her opponent retired during the first set at No. 3 singles. It was Steinbauer’s second straight win.

In doubles, Edyta Cieplucha and Heather Steinbauer earned their first win over a ranked duo with an 8-5 triumph against No. 35 Hilary Bartlett and Lindsay Graff.

The Mustangs(1-6) return to action by hosting BYU at the Las Colinas Country Club on Saturday at 3 p.m. SMU then hosts No. 40 Princeton next Sunday at 9:30 a.m.
