SMU Women Beat Harvard

SAN DIEGO (SMU) – The Mustangs scored a season-high 88 points, and Keena Mays and Alisha Filmore each eclipsed 20 points as SMU improved to 9-4 with an 88-73 win over Harvard (7-5) in the second round of the Surf ‘N Slam Classic at San Diego State University.

Mays scored 25 points, reaching 20 for the fourth time in five games, going 8-of-15 from the field, including 4-of-7 from 3-point range, and went 5-of-6 from the free throw line. Filmore scored a season-high 22 points on an 8-of-15 performance, and hit four 3-pointers in eight attempts. Mays also had a season-high eight assists with five rebounds, five steals and two blocks.

Harvard scored the first four points of the game, but the Mustangs took their first lead with 13:52 left in the first half on a 3-pointer by Filmore, 16-13, and never trailed again. SMU stretched the lead to 11 with 6:40 left in the first half. The Crimson cut the lead to five with a pair of free throws with just over a minute left in the first, but Mays answered with a 3-pointer and scored again with six second left in the half to give SMU a 42-32 lead at the break.

The Mustangs stretched the lead to as many as 20 in the second half, never letting Harvard within eight points, shooting 57.1 percent in the second 20 minutes to finish 48.4 percent for the game, 30-of-62. SMU was 8-of-20 from 3-point range, and made 20 of 26 free throws. Harvard shot 49.2 percent from the field, 30-of-61, and made six of 15 3-point shots.

Akil Simpson gave SMU three players in double digits with 15 points and seven rebounds, and freshman Gabrielle Wilkins had nine points with four rebounds. SMU swiped 14 steals, improving to 8-0 on the season when reaching 10 in a game. The Mustangs begin Conference USA action at Tulane on Jan. 10 at 7 p.m. before returning to Moody Coliseum to take on UCF on Jan. 13 at 2 p.m.
