SMU Women Beat Memphis
DALLAS (SMU) – Alicia Froling led all scorers with 19 points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds en route to her seventh double-double of the season, leading the SMU women’s basketball team to a 58-49 win against Memphis in Moody Coliseum Saturday. The 6-3 forward now has 12 career double-doubles and has scored at least 10 points in 11 games this season.
Trailing 26-21 at halftime, the Mustangs (8-8, 3-2 American Athletic Conference) came out of the break and outscored Memphis (9-9, 3-4 The American) 22-15 in the third quarter, using an 11-2 run to erase the deficit and take a 43-41 lead into the fourth quarter. Down 39-32 with four minutes remaining in the third quarter, SMU scored six unanswered points to cut the lead to one before Morgan Bolton hit a 3-pointer from the left side to give SMU its first lead of the game, 41-39. The Tigers tied the score, 41-41, with under a minute left, but Dai’ja Thomas closed the quarter with a layup to give SMU the two-point lead entering the last 10 minutes.
The Mustangs held Memphis to just two field goals in the fourth quarter, one in the last eight minutes of the game, and Froling scored eight of her 19 points as SMU pulled away for the 58-49 win.
Froling, who went 8-for-11 from the field, also tallied two blocks giving her 76 career-blocks, climbing into
the top 10 at SMU in career blocks. She set the SMU single-season record with 54 as a freshman, and has 22 blocks this season.
Bolton scored 11 points, reaching double figures for the fourth time this season and first since Dec. 19 against Arizona, going 3-for-4 from 3-point range with a pair of free throws in the final minute. Gabrielle Wilkins and McKenzie Adams each scored 10 points, with Wilkins going 4-for-8 from the field and 2-of-2 from the free throw line, while Adams went 3-for-11 from the field and had five assists. Thomas, a freshman forward, tallied a career-high four blocked shots, giving her 18 on the year. She also matched her season-high with nine rebounds and scored eight points.
SMU held the Tigers to 19 points and trailed by four, 19-15, after the opening 10 minutes, and held Memphis to a season-low seven points in the second quarter, but trailed 26-21 at halftime.
