SMU Women Blank Texas A&M-Corpus Christi

DALLAS (SMU) – SMU women’s tennis won its third straight match Sunday afternoon, beating Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 6-0 inside the Brookshire Family Pavilion at the SMU Tennis Complex.

The Mustangs improved to 3-3 on the season, while the Islanders fell to 4-1.

SMU won early break points to take control of the doubles matches. Seniors Liza Buss and Anzhelika Shapovalova opened the day with a 6-1 win at the No. 1 position over Carolina Bulatovic and Mariya Shumeika. Junior Sarai Monarrez Yesaki and sophomore Nicole Petchey, playing together for the first time this season, then clinched the doubles point at No. 3 with a 6-1 victory over Camille Townsend and Maria Maldonado.




The bottom of the lineup quickly extended the Mustangs’ lead to 3-0. Freshman Katherine Jakeway beat Myu Kageyama 6-2, 6-2 at No. 5 singles before Monarrez Yesaki beat Maldonado 6-3, 6-1 at No. 6. Shapovalova clinched the match for SMU with a straight-set victory over Townsend at No. 3, 6-1, 6-2.

Buss and Perez-Lopez rounded out the points for the Mustangs, winning in straight sets on Courts 2 and 4, respectively.

SMU plays next on Sunday, Feb. 17 when they host Tulane at noon at the SMU Tennis Complex.
