SMU Women Defeat Northwestern State

DALLAS (SMU) – The Mustangs improved to 4-1 at home with a 67-41 win over Northwestern State Monday night behind a season-high 15 points from Samantha Mahnesmith, who went 5-of-8 from the field including 3-of-5 from 3-point range.

SMU (5-4) out-scored the Lady Demons 21-10 over the first five minutes, and Northwestern State (2-5) never got within seven points the rest of the way. By the end of the first half, the Mustangs led 39-26, shooting 40.0-percent from the field and 44.4-percent from 3-point range.

The Mustang defense was even more stifling in the second half, holding Northwestern State to just 15 points, cruising to the 26-point victory. Northwestern State shot just 23.1-percent during the game, while SMU forced the Lady Demons into 26 turnovers for 24 points.

Akil Simpson added nine points, and freshman Destynee Hives-McCray finished with eight points, seven rebounds and three blocks, all season-highs. Christine Elliott scored eight points with a team-high 10 rebounds. The Mustangs out-scored Northwestern State 34-12 in the paint, and got 23 points from the bench.

The Mustangs continue the six-game homestand on Sunday, Dec. 18 against Texas A&M Corpus Christi. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m.
