SMU Women Defeat UCF

DALLAS (SMU) — The SMU women’s basketball team defeated UCF, 63-58, Saturday afternoon at Moody Coliseum. The Mustangs outscored UCF 22-3 in the second quarter to take the lead, and held of a charge at the end for a second consecutive conference win at home.

Trailing 18-9 at the beginning of the second, the Mustangs (13-10, 4-6 American Athletic Conference) went on a 17-0 run, keeping UCF (13-9, 3-6 AAC) scoreless for the first 7:47 of the second period. SMU did not allow a single field goal in over 14 minutes, spanning from late in the first quarter to the middle of the third quarter.

The Mustangs were a perfect 5-for-5 from behind the arc in the second quarter, with Amaura Brandt making three during the stretch. The first of Brandt’s 3-pointers gave SMU its first lead of the game, 19-18 with 6:31 left in the first half, as SMU erased an 11-point deficit. McKenzie Adams scored seven of her team-high 15 in the quarter as SMU pushed the lead to double figures at halftime, 31-21.

The Knights battled back, cutting the SMU lead to two, 51-49 with 4:15 left in the fourth quarter. Adams made it a two-possession game with a baseline jumper, giving the Mustangs a 53-49 lead with 1:47 left to play. UCF was forced to foul after Morgan Bolton stole the ball and was going up for a fastbreak layup. The senior point guard made both free throws, the first of 10 in 12 attempts by the Mustangs down the stretch.

Bolton finished with 12 points, making 9-of-12 from the free throw line, scoring in double figures for the second consecutive game. Alicia Froling added 12 points and nine rebounds, while Brandt finished with a season-high nine points and four rebounds.

SMU plays its next two games on the road, facing No. 1 Connecticut Saturday, Feb. 11, at 2 p.m. ET/1 p.m. CT on SNY/ESPN3.
