SMU Women Down Southeastern Louisiana

GARLAND, Texas (SMU) – Keena Mays scored a game-high 17 points to lead SMU to an 82-39 win against Southeastern Louisiana Wednesday night in the final game at the Curtis Culwell Center. Akil Simpson and Destynee Hives-McCray each finished with 14 points, as the Mustangs out-scored the Lady Lions 53-22 in the second half.

Leading by 12 at halftime, SMU (8-1) stretched the lead to 20 over the first eight minutes of the second half. Korina Baker made a pair of 3’s during the run, finishing with six points and four assists. The Mustangs led by 25, 60-35 with 6:17 left in the game, and out-scored Southeastern 22-4 over the last six minutes to take the 43-point win.

SMU shot 45.3 percent from the field, going 34-for-75, including a 59.0 shooting percentage in the second half, 23-for-39. The Mustangs held the Lady Lions (1-8) to a 24.6 percent clip and a season-low 39 points on 14 field goals in 57 attempts. All nine SMU players scored for the third time this season, and Mallory Singleton had a career-high seven assists to go with six points and five rebounds.

The Mustangs out-scored the Lady Lions 29-11 after Southeastern Louisiana score the first six points of the game, taking a 29-17 lead at halftime. Mays scored the first five points for SMU, sparking a 16-0 run, and the senior finished the half with 12 points.

Raven Short finished the game with nine points and a team-high nine rebounds. As a team, SMU out-rebounded the Lady Lions 51-39, and scored 25 points on 21 SLU turnovers. SMU committed just 10 turnovers, and had 10 steals and a season-high eight blocks on the defensive end.

The Mustangs begin a four-game road trip at UTEP Saturday at 5:30 p.m. CT. SMU plays its next home game on Jan. 4 in newly-renovated Moody Coliseum against South Florida at 3:30 p.m. The game is the second half of a doubleheader with the SMU men’s basketball team.
