SMU Women Drop Game At Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (SMU) – Jessica Bartol scored in her second straight match, but a late goal led the Memphis Tigers over the SMU Mustangs 2-1 at Mike Rose Stadium in Memphis, Tenn., on Thursday night.
SMU fell to 7-6-0 (2-3-0 American Athletic Conference) while Memphis earned its first league win to improve to 8-5-0 (1-3-0).
Bartol got SMU on the board first in the 38th minute after a scramble after a corner kick led the ball to the foot of Briana Gaines. Gaines redirected the ball to Bartol, who tallied her second goal of 2013. The senior defender also scored SMU’s first goal in Sunday’s 2-1 win over Cincinnati.
Memphis answered quickly at the 41:13 mark when Valerie Sanderson notched her 10th of the season. Sanderson gobbled up a rebound off a shot from Kaitlyn Atkins and struck the ball past SMU goalie Lauryn Bodden.
The two sides would trade shots and possession before Memphis took the lead in the 79th minute. Emily Adamic, who only played the second half, received a deflected cross in front of Bodden and pushed it past for the game-winning goal.
SMU freshman Taylor Jackson recorded a shot on goal with 35 seconds left, but the
attempt was saved by Tigers goalie Maryse Bard-Martel.
Kelsey Gorney and Courtney Smith led SMU with three shots each.
SMU travels to Piscataway, N.J., on Sunday for a matchup with Rutgers. The Scarlet Knights are 10-2-1 (3-1-0) and came into the day ranked third in the league. Mustangs Head Coach Chris Petrucelli believes his team will come out strong on Sunday, with a few areas of improvement available.
“Our team has shown that we’ll fight every game, but we’ve got to do more than that,” Petrucelli said. “We’ve got to string a few more passes together and control the ball to be able to compete with the top teams in the league, like Rutgers.”
