SMU women fall to ECU

GREENVILLE, N.C. – Delisha Wills led the Mustangs with 16 points and Raquel Christian added 15, but East Carolina took the game 77-70. With the loss, SMU fell to 13-12, 6-6 in Conference USA, while ECU improved to 12-13, 6-6 C-USA.

The Mustangs scored the first six points of the game before the Pirates went on a 13-2 run early in the first half. East Carolina shot 55.2-percent from the field in the first half, stretching the lead to as many as 14. SMU closed the half with an 8-2 run to cut the lead to 36-28 at the break.

SMU went 9-of-24 from the field in the first half (37.5-percent), making just one shot from behind the arc, but went 9-for-12 at the free throw line. The Pirates made 16-of-29 shots from the field, including a pair of 3-pointers, and made two of three free throws.

The Mustangs fought all the way back, tying the game 47-47 on a 3-point basket by Raquel Christian with 12:59 left. SMU took its first lead since early in the first half when a fastbreak layup by Christian put the Mustangs on top 49-47 with 11:36 to play.

The lead didn’t last long, however, as the Pirates retook the lead and pushed it to 13 with three minutes left in the game. The Mustangs battled to the end, but eventually fell 77-70.

The Mustangs finished the game shooting 39.1-percent (25-of-64), but the Pirates connected on 32-of-55 (58.2-percent). Alisha Filmore scored 14 points, giving SMU three players in double figures. Chareya Smith led the Pirates with 22 points.

SMU will return home Sunday, Feb. 20, to face UAB at 2 p.m. A Fan Fest featuring Nastia Liukin will take place in the Crum Center prior to the game to celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day. SMU will also participate in the WBCA’s PinkZone, raising funds and awareness for breast cancer research.
