SMU Women Go Down 53-49 In Final Minute To UAB

DALLAS (SMU) – Haley Day led the Mustangs with 13 points, but fouled out with 1:17 left in a tie game as UAB knocked off SMU 53-49 in Moody Coliseum Sunday. SMU fell to 13-13 overall, 6-7 in Conference USA, while the Blazers climbed to 14-12, 6-7 C-USA.

Day went 3-for-5 from the field and 5-of-8 at the free throw line to lead SMU, but picked up her fifth foul after an SMU turnover with the game tied 49-49 with just over a minute left. The Blazers held SMU scoreless and made a pair of free throws in the final minute to take the win.

SMU trailed 27-18 at halftime, shooting 30-percent in the first half (6-of-20), but opened the second half on an 18-5 run to take a 36-32 lead with 11:24 left in the game. The Mustangs pushed the lead to five on a 3-pointer by Day with 6:57 remaining, but the Blazers tied the score with just over four minutes left. SMU never led again.

Christine Elliott finished with 11 points, and Delisha Wills, Samantha Mahnesmith and Krystal Johnson each added seven. The Mustangs finished the game shooting 37.8-percent, 17-of-45, but were just 11-of-18 from the free throw line.

Amber Jones led the Blazers with 20 points, and Karisma Chapman scored 17. UAB shot 36-percent from the field as a team, 18-of-50, and made 16-of-23 free throws.

SMU will face Memphis on the road Thursday, Feb. 24, at 7 p.m. The Mustangs also face UTEP on the road Feb. 27 before closing the regular season at home against Rice on March 3.
