NEW ORLEANS (SMU) – The SMU Mustangs received 16 points and seven rebounds from junior Destynee Hives-McCray, but could not overcome a late Tulane three-pointer with under a minute to go and fell 60-58 to the Green Wave in New Orleans on Saturday afternoon.

Junior Gabrielle Wilkins gave SMU (4-13, 0-6 The American) a 53-50 lead at the 4:30 mark with three free throws after getting fouled by Tulane’s Tierra Jones. Wilkins would add three more free throws after another foul from Jones with 3:58 to go, giving SMU a four-point cushion, 56-52.

SMU would hit two more free throws by the 2-minute mark, but a pair of layups from Tulane’s Leslie Vorpahl and Kolby Morgan kept the Green Wave within two points with 2:09 remaining. After Kiara Perry missed a three-pointer for SMU, Vorpahl went down and nailed a three-pointer of her own to give Tulane a 59-58 edge with 1:25 remaining.

Hives-McCray would give SMU a huge defensive play with a block on Vorpahl with 18 seconds remaining, maintaining just a one-point deficit for SMU. The Mustangs then ran a play with Perry driving to the basket and kicking the ball out to Alicia Froling for a baseline jumper, but the freshman missed the shot and Vorpahl collected the rebound for the Green Wave with just five seconds left.

SMU held a 35-29 lead at halftime, with both Perry (11 points) and Hives-McCray (12) hitting double-figures in scoring in the opening frame.

Vorpahl and Danielle Blagg each had 16 points to lead Tulane (14-3, 5-1). Blagg also added nine rebounds, while Tiffany Dale also collected nine boards to go with eight points. Tulane has received votes both polls at times earlier in the season.

Froling finished with nine points, while Wilkins added seven points (all on free throws), five assists, four rebounds and three blocks.

SMU will host East Carolina at 7 p.m. CT on Wednesday at Moody Coliseum.
