SMU Women Top Mississippi Valley State

DALLAS (SMU) – In her second collegiate game, freshman Kayla White dropped 19 points leading the Mustangs to a 62-47 win over Mississippi Valley State Monday night at Moody Coliseum.

White got off to a red-hot start outscoring MVSU on her own in the first quarter, as the freshman poured in 11. White was one of three Mustang freshmen to score in double figures. Altogether, freshmen accounted for 48 of the Mustangs’ 62 points.

Freshman BriShonne Tollie came off the bench to tally 13 points. Tollie hit 5-of-9 and brought in seven boards. Fellow freshman Amber Bacon dropped 10 on MVSU, with six coming at the charity stripe.

The Mustangs’ defense held their opponent to under 50 for the second straight game to start the season. The Devilettes were limited to 29.2 percent from the field and had 15 turnovers forced by SMU. The Mustangs improved to 2-0 with the win, while Mississippi Valley State fell to 0-2.




SMU took the lead 47 seconds into the game and never relinquished. The Mustangs assisted on 16-of-22 made baskets with Bacon leading the way with five dimes. Alicia Froling reached double-figures on the glass and chipped in three assists and a pair of blocks.

The three-game home stand wraps up on Thursday as the Mustangs play host to the Alabama Crimson Tide. Tipoff is slated for 7:00 p.m. from Moody Coliseum. The Mustangs will end the weekend with a Sunday tilt in Fort Worth against TCU.
