SMU Women’s Tennis Beats UTEP

DALLAS (SMU) – Sophomore Hristina Dishkova improved to 14-10 overall after defeating UTEP junior Davina Meza in three sets, 6-1, 2-6, 6-4 in the No. 2 singles match as the SMU women’s tennis team defeated the Miners, 5-2 in Dallas on Saturday. This was the second match of a doubleheader as the Mustangs defeated Sam Houston State, 5-0 earlier today.

“I thought we did a fantastic job competing,” head coach Kati Gyulai said. “This was a complete team effort, everyone contributed. Well done.”

SMU (3-8) took the opening doubles point and then won at the No. 2, 4, 5 and 6 singles positions to secure the match victory over UTEP (6-7).

In addition to Dishkova in singles, sophomore Yana Erkeeva (12-7) won at the No. 4 singles position as she beat Miner senior Gabi Vazquez, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 while freshmen Macie Elliott (8-12) and Anna Kate Anderson (8-10) won at the No. 5 and 6 singles positions in straight sets.

In doubles, sophomore Vaszilisza Bulgakova and freshman Dasha Sharapova (6-3), Dishkova and junior Holly Verner (7-1) and Erkeeva and Elliott (10-4) all notched victories securing the doubles point for SMU.

SMU is back in action on Thurs., March 6 when the team plays host to American Athletic Conference foe Temple at 4 p.m. That match will be played at the Northwood Country Club in Dallas.
