SMU Women’s Tennis Sweeps UTA

DALLAS (SMU) — The No. 52 SMU women’s tennis team won the top four singles matches in a 4-0 sweep of UTA at Northwood Country Club on Wednesday. The Mustangs honored seniors Aleksandra Malyarchikova and Edyta Cieplucha at the final regular season match.

“Senior day is always very special,” said head coach Kati Gyulai. “We are extremely proud of the accomplishments of Sasha (Malyarchikova) and Edyta (Cieplucha). They will leave our program with as SMU graduates; as Conference USA Champions; NCAA Sweet 16 participants; with national rankings in team, singles and doubles; and in the top 10 for career singles and doubles wins. We congratulate them on a stellar career! They are Mustangs forever!”

Due to the rain, the match was moved indoors and started with singles. In the top matchup, No. 73 Malyarchikova improved to 22-6 on the season with a 6-0, 6-1 win. The victory improved the reigning C-USA Player of the Week to 85-15 for her career, which is sixth in wins at SMU and second in career winning percentage (.850). Malyarchikova is also tied for fourth in doubles wins with 75.

Cieplucha did not play in this match, but is 77-34 in her career. She is tied for eighth at SMU in career victories and is 10th in winning percentage (.694). Cieplucha is also eighth in doubles victories at 70.

The Mustangs also earned points in the match from Vaszilisza Bulgakova’s 6-2, 7-6 triumph at No. 2, Elena Fayner’s 6-0, 6-7, 6-2 victory at No. 3 andHristina Dishkova’s 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 4.

SMU’s next match will be at the Conference USA Championship that is April 18-21 in Houston.
