SMU Women’s Tennis Upsets Tulsa

DALLAS (SMU) — The SMU women’s tennis team upset No. 22 Tulsa 4-3 on Friday; winning for the sixth time in the last seven matches. The Mustangs (7-4) won all four of their points in singles, taking No. 2 through No. 5.

“We played at an optimal intensity level and it paid off,” said head coach Kati Gyulai. “It is nice to break through against a very good Tulsa team. We are pleased with the outcome”

In singles, the Mustangs earned the four points by winning at No. 2 through No. 5. Two os the wins were in straight sets; Vaszilisza Bulgakova won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 and Hristina Dishkova earned a 6-3, 7-6 decision at No. 5. At No. 2, Aleksandra Malyarchikova took the first set before eventually winning a three-set match 7-6, 2-6, 6-4. In the No. 4 singles match, Elena Fayner rallied for a 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 three-set victory after dropping the first set

The match started with Tulsa taking the doubles point. SMU got its win at No. 2 as Holly Verner and Hristina Dishkova won 8-6.

The Mustangs head to California for three matches this week. SMU visits UC Irvine on Sunday, UC Santa Barbara on Tuesday and Santa Clara on Wednesday
