DALLAS (SMU) – SMU linebacker Ja’Gared Davis has been named to the Butkus Award Watch List, the organization announced today. The Award, in its 28th year, honors the nation’s best linebacker.

Davis, a two-time All-Conference USA selection, started all 13 games in 2011, notching 83 tackles, including a team-high 12 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks. He earned National Defensive Player of the Week honors after recording eight tackles, 2.5 for loss including 1.5 sacks, an interception, three pass breakups, and a forced fumble and recovery for a touchdown against UTEP and later led the team with nine stops in the BBVA Compass Bowl win.

The Watch List contains 51 candidates, honoring the now-retired professional jersey number of Dick Butkus, who is regarded by NFL Films as the best defensive player in football history. The selection panel is comprised of 51 coaches, evaluators and journalists, coordinated by Pro Football Weekly.

Semi-finalists will be named October 22, finalists November 20, and winners will be notified on or before December 4. Candidates in addition to those appearing on the watch list may be considered for the Award.
