SMU’s Edyta Cieplucha Wins Singles Title At The Rice Invitational

HOUSTON (SMU) — No. 34 Edyta Cieplucha won the singles title at the Rice Invitational women’s tennis tournament. Cieplucha also partnered with Heidi Stewart to finish runner-up in doubles.

“Congratulations to Edyta for winning the singles title,” said head coach Kati Gyulai. “We also had a break-through doubles performance by Hristina (Dishkova) and Elena (Fayner), which we are super pleased with and looking to build upon. This was a great event for us en route to the ITA Regional tournament in two weeks. “

In the Flight 1 singles final, Cieplucha lost the first set before dominating the remainder of the match in a 6-7, 6-1, 6-1 win against Stefania Hristov of Texas A&M. Also in Flight 1, Dishkova defeated Mary Jeremiah of LSU 6-1, 6-2 in the consolation final.

In Flight 1 of doubles, Cieplucha and Stewart fell 8-5 in the championship to Stefania Hristov and Anna Mamalat of Texas A&M. Fayner recorded her first doubles victory as her and Dishkova won 8-6 in the consolation third-place matchup over Ariel Morton and Kaitlin Burns of LSU.

The Mustangs begin play in the ITA Regional on Oct. 19 in Waco.
