SMU’s Kennedy Named Player of the Week

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (The American/SMU) – SMU junior Markus Kennedy was named the American Athletic Conference Player of the Week, the league announced Monday. Kennedy averaged 17.5 points (15-for-21, 71.4%), 9.0 rebounds and 1.5 assists in two victories last week.

Kennedy had a career-high 22 points on 10 of 12 shooting at USF last Wednesday. He also had seven rebounds, two assists and a steal in the game. Against UCF, Kennedy had 13 points and 11 rebounds for his seventh career double-double. He also had two blocks, the third time he has had two or more in a game this season.

The honor makes it back-to-back Player of the Week accolades for the Mustangs, as Nic Moore was recognized last week. SMU has three Player of the Week honors, Yanick Moreira earned the award on Dec. 22. This is the first Player of the Week honor for Kennedy. He has been on the The American Weekly Honor Roll five times, including once this season.

SMU (18-4, 9-1) is a half-game out of first place in The American (Tulsa 16-5, 9-0 AAC). The Mustangs have won 16 of the last 17 games, including eight straight. SMU hosts Cincinnati on Thursday at 8 p.m. CT (ESPN). The Ponies are 13-1 at home this season.
