SMU’s Line Named To Watch List For Maxwell Award

DALLAS (SMU) – SMU running back Zach Line has been named to the Watch List for the Maxwell Award, the Maxwell Football Club announced today. The junior is one of 66 players named to the list for the award, which has been given to America’s outstanding collegiate football player since 1937 and is named in honor of sportswriter Robert W. “Tiny” Maxwell.

Line, an Oxford, Mich., native was named first-team All-Conference USA in 2010 after rushing for 1,494 yards, the second-largest single-season total in school history, trailing only Eric Dickerson’s 1,617 yards in 1982. The tally was 11th in the country, and Line averaged 6.1 yards per carry and scored 10 touchdowns on the year.

The 2010 Maxwell Award winner was quarterback Cam Newton of Auburn, who was selected No. 1 overall by the Carolina Panthers in the 2011 NFL Draft. SMU’s Doak Walker was also a Maxwell Award winner, claiming the honor in 1947.

The watch list candidates were chosen by the Maxwell Football Club’s selection committee, evaluating past performance and future potential. All members of the Maxwell Football Club, NCAA sports information directors, head coaches, and selected national media are eligible to vote for the awards.

Semifinalists for the Maxwell Award will be announced October 31st and the three finalists for the award will be unveiled November 21st. The winners of the 2011 Maxwell Award will be announced as part of the Home Depot ESPNU College Football Awards Show held on December 8th. The formal presentation of the award will be made at the Maxwell Football Club Awards Gala hosted by Harrah’s Entertainment Atlantic City on March 2, 2012.
