SMU’s Marta Lesniak Named To ITA All-America Team

SKILLMAN, N.J. (SMU) — SMU junior Marta Lesniak was named to the 2011 ITA All-America Team on Thursday. She earned the eighth SMU All-America honor and first since 1989. Lesniak finished the season ranked No. 15 with a 42-7 overall record while going 18-6 against ranked oppoents. She earned her third selection to the NCAA Singles Championship and helped the Mustangs to a 23-6 season as they reached the NCAA Sweet 16 for the first time since 1988.

This season, Lesniak was tabbed as the ITA National Player to Watch and the Texas Region Player to Watch. She also earned her second straight C-USA Player of the Year honor and her third straight selection to the All-Conference USA First Team. She was also named C-USA Singles Player of the Championship for the second time (2009). Lesniak’s 42 wins this season rank second at SMU (45 by Stephanie Fess 1981-82) and her 85 career wins are fifth at SMU. Lesniak is also second at SMU in career winning percentage (.850, 85-15) and along with her teammate Aleksandra Malyarchikova, rank first all-time in career doubles victories with 52. In the fall, the native of Poland made the singles finals at the ITA Regional and won the consolation bracket of the 2010 ITA National Indoor Championships. She has been named C-USA Player of the Week nine times in her career and C-USA Player of the Month four times, sweeping all three awards in the fall of 2010. Lesniak was named the ITA Southwest Rookie of the Year in 2009.
