IRVING, Texas (SMU / C-USA) — SMU senior Robert Nyakundi has been named All-Conference USA third team by the league’s coaches and media. Nyakundi, an SMU team captain, earned the honor for the second straight season as he ranks sixth in C-USA in scoring (15.0) and leads C-USA in 3-point percentage (42.5). He also ranks second in C-USA for threes made (2.7) and fourth in free throw percentage (.800).

“The team is led by Rob,” says head coach Matt Doherty. “Rob has been here five years. He was banged up a lot and out of shape when he first got here, but Rob has made himself into a very good college basketball player, and for that, I’m extremely proud.”

Nyakundi is also leading SMU in rebounds (4.7) while ranking 12th in the league in field goal percentage (46.8) while adding 1.1 steals and nearly an assist per game.

In 2010-11, Nyakundi led C-USA and was second in the NCAA in 3-point percentage (.497). He could become just the second person to lead C-USA in threes percentage twice. Drake Diener of DePaul led the league in 2003-04 (.459) and 2004-05 (.462).

For his career, he is second at SMU in 3-pointers made (265), second in 3-point percentage (43.8), second in free throw percentage (85.0) and tied for 17th in points (1343).

Before his senior season, Nyakundi was selected Preseason All-C-USA second team by the league’s coaches and Lindy’s Sports Annuals. Additionally, The Sporting News tabbed him as the Best Shooter in C-USA.

Nyakundi and the Mustangs will face No. 6 seed Marshall (18-12, 9-7 C-USA) in the first round of the Conference USA Championship at the FedExForum in Memphis on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m.
