SMU’s Powell Named To COBRA Magazine All-Preseason Team

DALLAS (SMU) – SMU volleyball player Dana Powell was selected to the COBRA Magazine All-Preseason team, becoming the first Mustang to be named to the magazine’s preseason team.

“This is a tremendous honor for a well-deserving student-athlete,” head coach Lisa Seifert said of the announcement. “It is very difficult to describe a person like Dana Powell. She is very intelligent, well-mannered, passionate, funny, honest and loyal, just to name a few of her character traits. She has been blessed with amazing parents and a great deal of athletic ability. It has been an honor to coach her, and we are lucky to have her at SMU.”

Powell earned her second All-America honorable mention last season, becoming the first Mustang named to the All-America team twice. The junior led the Mustangs with 416 kills (seventh in Conference USA) and was third on the team with 445 digs (11th in C-USA) on her way to a second All-Conference USA selection.

An outside hitter from Tulsa, Okla., Powell led the Mustangs to a school-record 25 wins in 2010 and a second place finish in Conference USA with a 17-3 league mark. Powell led the Mustangs to top-five marks in the conference in hitting percentage (third), kills (fifth) and digs (first).

In addition to her outstanding performance on the volleyball court, Powell has also excelled in the classroom during her career. Working toward dual degrees in business and accounting, Powell has posted a 3.51 GPA during her three years and was named to the C-USA All-Academic team last season.

Powell enters the 2011 season eighth all-time at SMU with 1,164 kills and sixth all-time with 1,169 digs. She is just the seventh Mustangs to record at least 1,000 kills and digs in a career.
