The Dallas Stars improved their regular season record to 2-1-0 by defeating the Phoenix Coyotes on Monday night in the shootout. This was the fifth-consecutive one-goal affair between these two clubs, with the Stars winning two of them, and the Coyotes taking three.

The Stars trailed 1-0 when Phoenix got a power play goal early in the 3rd period.  With 27 seconds left in the game, Loui Eriksson tied the game to send it into overtime.

Dallas was 0-for-6 on power plays, an area they have to improve.   “Our power play, which I’m in charge of, was atrocious and I think we have to revisit it,” said Stars coach Glen Gulutzan. “We also have to revisit our work ethic on the power play because we don’t win any battles. We’ve got to battle to win. We can’t get outworked 5-on-4.”

Kari Lehtonen stopped 40 of 41 shots though the 65 minutes of regulation and overtime, and 2-of-3 in the shootout. He now has a 0.96 GAA and a .975 SV% for the season, improved to 2-0-0 on the season.

Sheldon Souray earned a point in his third-straight game (o-3-3). It is the the first time since Dec. 15-19, 2009 that he has registered a point in three-straight games (1-3-4)

Trevor Daley appeared in his 500th career NHL game. Daley joins seven other current Stars who have played in 500-or-more games.

Dallas is off until Thursday, when they host St. Louis.
