OMAHA, Neb. – Trey Teakell retired all 13 batters he faced in relief and the TCU offense used a three-run fifth to take control en route to an 8-4 victory over LSU Thursday night. The Horned Frogs stave off elimination and will face Vanderbilt Friday night at 7 on ESPN.

Teakell was brilliant in relief of Mitchell Traver as he improved to 3-1 this season. The redshirt-senior retired all 13 batters he faced over 4 1/3 innings. Traver allowed three runs on four hits, walked two and struck out four. Preston Guillory picked up the final four outs of the game. He was touched for a run on three hits and struck out three.

A one-out walk to Jake Fraley had the Tigers in business in the first. After a stolen base, Kade Scivicque singled through the right side to put LSU in front 1-0.

The Frogs battled back with a three-run second inning to take the lead. Evan Skoug led off the frame with a base hit. Dane Steinhagen followed with a hit and a walk to Derek Odell loaded the bases. Keaton Jones worked

his way back from a 0-2 count to draw a walk, tying the game at one. LSU went to the bullpen and called on Hunter Newman who was greeted by a two-run single from Garrett Crain, putting the Frogs up 3-1.

LSU didn’t waste any time knotting the game at three. Alex Bregman reached on a one-out infield single and made it a one-run game as he scored on an RBI triple from Fraley. A wild pitch tied the game at three after three innings.

Teakell came on in the fourth with a runner on and one out. He got a pair of groundouts to end the inning, changing the momentum in the game.

The Frogs responded with a three-run fifth to open up a 6-3 lead. Cody Jones got things going as he worked a lead-off walk. After a one-out walk to Connor Wanhanen, Evan Skoug ripped a 1-2 offering into right field for an RBI-double and a 4-3 TCU lead. Dane Steinhagen tacked on a pair of insurance runs with a base hit to right.

Two more runs crossed the plate in the seventh as the TCU lead grew to five. Again, it was a walk to Cody Jones that set the tone. Jeremie Fagnan followed with a bunt single to put two on with nobody out. With runners on the corners, Evan Skoug hit a slow roller to the pitcher to make it a 7-3 game. Steinhagen picked up his third RBI of the night with a two-out single to center for an 8-3 lead.

LSU made it interesting in the ninth as it scored a run and had the tying run on deck. Back-to-back doubles from Chris Sciambra and Andrew Stevenson made in an 8-4 game. With two outs, Mark Laird singled to put runners on the corners. Guillory struck out Jared Foster to end the game.

The Horned Frogs improve to 51-14 overall and live to fight another day. TCU will square off against Vanderbilt Friday night at 7 p.m on ESPN. The Frogs will have to win to force another game on Saturday.
