TCU Swimming Knocks Off UT-Permian Basin

ANDREWS, Texas – TCU’s swimming and diving squads won and set pool records in 19 of 20 events Monday afternoon as the Horned Frogs knocked off UT-Permian Basin 105-81 on the men’s side and 101-81 in the women’s competition. The victories at Mustang Natatorium moves both teams to 1-0 on the season.
“I am very pleased with how our kids competed,” head coach Richard Sybesma said. “We had a good morning of training with a sprint workout and came back in the afternoon with good, hard racing.”
The TCU men won all 10 events Monday afternoon. The top of the leaderboard featured many new faces that will be important to the Horned Frogs’ success in 2012-13. Leading the way in that department was Harrison Bui. The freshman from Houston clinched individual victories in the 200 IM (1:57.33) and 100 breast (58.33) along with being a member of the winning 200 medley relay squad on the breaststroke leg.
“Harrison is someone who is trying to fill (Edgar) Crespo’s void,” Sybesma noted. “That is where we want him to go. He is a relatively inexperienced swimmer, but if he continues to work hard, he will have a great career at TCU.”
Also joining Bui on the victorious relay squad was freshman Adam Szilagyi. The Hungarian swam the butterfly leg of the 200 medley relay before going on to dominate the 100 fly in 51.78. Another freshman winner on the men’s side was Corey Nix, who touched the wall first in the 100 free in 48.18.
“It was good to see them get out and race the way they did,” Sybesma said. “They had tough races before that and they were both able to post good wins. It was a quick meet and they did a very good job recovering in the meet.”
The veterans of the TCU men’s squad also had their day as Devin Price anchored the 200 medley relay team and won the 50 free (21.21) and Cooper Robinson was a member of the winning 200 medley and 400 free relay teams along with a win in the 100 back (50.93).
Other winners on the men’s side included Ross Van Allen in the 200 free (1:44.96), Thor Stenfjord in the 500 free (4:43.87) and the 400 free relay and Ryan Hall and Josh Mangus in the 400 free relay.
On the women’s side Ali Bleasdell, Aly Davis, Gabi Korac and Sabine Rasch earned the win in the 200 medley relay. Three of the four would go on to take wins in individual events. Bleasdell took the 200 IM (2:08.50), Korac the 100 breast (1:07.90) and Rasch the 50 free (24.28).
A freshman on the women’s side who posted an impressive debut meet was Sara Brzozowski. The Brookfield, Wis. import touched the wall first in the 200 free (1:54.17) and the 500 free (5:02.42).
“She has very good times for early October,” Sybesma said. “We are looking for big things from her in events ranging from the 200 free to the mile. It was a really good way to start her season and career at TCU.”
Other winers for the women’s team included Carmen Lindmoen in the 100 fly (59.22), Katie Scarsella in the 100 free (53.70) and Ashley Alspaugh in the 100 back (59.63).
“I am happy with how our team competed,” Sybesma concluded. “They did a good job in the water and won with class. We have had a good trip with both team bonding and training.”
The Horned Frogs will host its annual Alumni Meet Saturday, Oct. 20 at 10 a.m. at TCU Rec Center Natatorium. The TCU women will resume competition on Oct. 26-27 at the Rice Invitational in Houston.
