DALLAS – The TCU men’s tennis team won its second-straight match in shutout fashion Tuesday when it took down SMU, 5-0, at Northwood Country Club.

The squads agreed to halt remaining matches after the match was clinched for either team. The Horned Frogs improved to 8-13 and won for the third time in the last four tries against their crosstown rival. SMU fell to 9-11 on the year.

“We thought the guys did a great job of handling some difficult situations in the doubles matches to get the doubles point and create momentum going into the singles,” TCU coach David Roditi said. “There’s a lot of tradition between these two schools in tennis so it’s always special to get a win, but they’ve had some bad luck with injuries. This creates good momentum going into our final regular season and home match against New Mexico. It will be a special day for our seniors.”

Daniel Sanchez and Max Stevens clinched the doubles point for the Frogs in thrilling fashion when they scored a 9-7 win over Mischa Nowicki and Pablo Perez-Espanola. Nick Chappell and Will Stein added TCU’s other win in doubles when picked up an 8-5 triumph.

smuFacundo Lugones continued his solid first year for TCU as singles began, claiming a 6-4, 6-2 win over Nowicki at No. 3 singles. Lugones was once again the first Frog off the court and put TCU ahead 2-0.

Stevens followed with his second-straight singles win to make it 3-0 in favor of TCU. The Dallas, Texas, native knocked off Robert Lambeth, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 6 singles. Stein’s 6-4, 6-2 downing of Tobias Flood at No. 5 singles scored the fourth point to clinch the match.

JT Sundling also added his second-straight win by dropping Arturs Kazijevs, 6-3, 6-1 on court No. 2 to score the fifth and final point. Chappell was up a set at No. 1 singles when his match was stopped, while Sanchez’s match was stopped in the third set.

TCU closes the regular season portion of its schedule Saturday when New Mexico visits the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center. Sanchez and Paul Chappell, TCU’s seniors, will be honored at the match.
