TCU Wins Volleyball Tournament

FORT WORTH – TCU’s women’s volleyball team picked up a thrilling 3-1 (25-19, 20-25, 25-23, 25-22) triumph over Army to capture the TCU Nike Invitational title in front of 1,164 fans inside the TCU University Rec Center.

With the win, the Horned Frogs improved to 5-1 and won their fifth-straight match. Army dropped to 3-3. TCU was the only squad to go 3-0 at the tournament.

Junior Yvonne Igodan was named the tournament MVP after tallying a career-high 24 kills in the tournament finale against Army. For the weekend, the Houston native had 55 kills with a .469 attack percentage.

Leading 2-1 in the match and with Army threatening to force a fifth set, Igodan took over the fourth set to give the Frogs a 3-1 win. With TCU trailing 22-21, Igodan hammered home the final four kills of the match to polish off a 25-22 fourth-set win and 3-1 triumph in the match.

In the opening set, TCU and Army exchanged points early before a 4-0 Frog run broke the set open for a 19-13 lead. As she did all match and all weekend, Igodan paced the Frogs offensively with five kills on 11 attacks. Her kill on the final point of the set put TCU ahead 1-0 after a 25-19 win.

The visiting Black Knights refused to go quietly in the second set. Leading 12-10, Army took control of the set with a 7-2 run for a 19-12 lead, including two points after TCU had used a timeout at 5-2.

TCU was never able to create momentum into the intermission as Army claimed a 25-20 set two win to even the match at 1.

Keeping with the theme of the match, the third set was just as competitive. With the match tied at nine, three Igodan kills keyed a 6-2 TCU burst and a 15-11 lead. Army again closed the gap to 20-all with key kills.

Bolstered by Igodan’s seven kills and Sloane Sunstrum’s four in the set, TCU squeaked out a 25-23 triumph to take the commanding 2-1 lead in the match.

The Frogs tallied a .250 attack percentage overall and dominated the net, holding a 9.0-2.0 blocking advantage. Megan Munce had a career-high 22 digs to go along with 43 assists from her setter position.

The double-double was the 27th of Munce’s career and second in 2012. Sunstrum joined her with a double-double in the stat column (12 kills, 12 digs). It was her seventh all-time and second this season.

Along with Igodan, Munce and sophomore Mattie Burleson were named to the All-Tournament Team. Burleson had 15 kills and 11 blocks on the weekend, while Munce racked up 17 kills, 103 assists, 32 digs and eight aces.

TCU returns to action next weekend in Tucson, Ariz., for the Wildcat Classic. The Horned Frogs square off with Lipscomb to kick off the event.
